  Case Study

Adding a Feature to an Existing Mobile App

Background

The Project

Moving is a stressful process. As people are becoming more reliant on rideshare apps and online furniture marketplaces, our society has a strong need for help with transporting large items. People need an alternative service to fulfill this need.

To solve this issue, my team and I created a hauling service within the Uber app. Uber Haul is the perfect alternative to asking your friend with a truck for a favor. This service allows for people to request a ride with a truck and a mover, to fulfill your transporting needs.

The Goal

To eliminate the stress of moving by successfully implementing a moving service into the Uber mobile app. The process to request a truck should be quick, easy, and efficient.

The Challenge

Designing an experience that looks and operates like the existing Uber app.

Research

User Interviews

Discovering users' needs for a moving service

15

Findings

  • People need help hauling furniture

  • People want transporting large items to be easier

  • People utilize their social circle for large vehicle space

  • Moving help is inconvenient or expensive

  • Lack of truck access prevents people from buying used furniture

User Interviews

"Transporting items by myself is a headache I do not want to deal with."

Task Analysis

Analyzing task procedures of competitors

Findings

  • Competitors allow users to select the size truck the need

  • Competitors require a pick up and drop off address

  • Users can upload photos of their item

  • Users can write a description of their item

Problem Statement

“Worried William” needs a convenient and affordable way to transport a couch from the seller to his new apartment, so he does not have to rely on others for help.

Userflow

Illustrating how users will complete a task

  • Gained a visual understanding how users get from start to finish

  • Identified where to place each step in the process

  • Organized where to implement each feature

Sketching

Designing features to satisfy our users needs

  • Sketched low-fi drawings to get ideas on paper

  • Explored multiple design options for each feature

  • Identified where to place each feature and how it will look
